"Whoever makes others hear of his deed, Allah will make others hear of him. And whoever shows off, Allah will show him off."

The punishment answers the crime with a kind of terrible symmetry. You wanted to be seen. On a Day when every covering is lifted, you will be — and what will be shown is not the deed but what lay beneath it, before precisely the audience you were performing for.
