Rān. A covering; a film. The lexicons reach for rust — the thin dark bloom that settles upon metal and eats it while it goes on shining. The whole of this book rests on that image.
Rust is not a blow. Nothing struck the metal, and nothing announced itself. It arrived one imperceptible layer at a time, out of the ordinary air, and by the time there is anything to see, the thing has been changing for years.
