The Arithmetic of Sin

First you recognise the room it happened in. Then you see what it is called. Only then does anything get counted — and the counting is not where it ends.

The glance

A look you did not plan. The first is not the sin; the second is.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Five

  • You are lying in bed, the thumb moving at a speed you are not conscious of. An image passes, and you have already looked. That was not it.
  • The event is the half-second after — the thumb slowing, the scroll not continuing. That second is deliberate, and you know that it is.
  • The episode was fine. There was one scene. You did not skip it, and you did not need to decide to not skip it.
  • The song was on a playlist. The video played by itself, and you let it keep playing.

"I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the sudden glance, and he commanded me to turn my gaze away."

Where the second look happens

What you passed on

Over

the zinā of the eyes is the gaze, and the zinā of the ears is listening

He named the limbs separately, so the tally does too. A music video is counted twice over because it is both. The last group is the part that does not stop when you close the app.

and the narration this factor comes from

"Written upon the son of Adam is his share of zinā, which he will inevitably reach: the zinā of the eyes is the gaze, the zinā of the ears is listening, and the zinā of the tongue is speech." The narration continues, in substance: the hand and the foot have their share also, the heart desires and wishes, and the private parts either confirm that or deny it.

The rushed prayer

Not whether you prayed. How much of it you were present for.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Nine

  • You prayed ʿAṣr today. Try now to remember it. Not whether you prayed — what did you recite in the second rakʿah?
  • For most of us there is nothing there. Not a poor prayer and not a distracted one — an absent one, performed completely and correctly.
  • You came up from sujūd before your forehead had properly settled, because you had already started on what came next.
  • The body present, the obligation discharged, and nobody home.

"The worst thief among people is the one who steals from his prayer." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, how does he steal from his prayer?" He said: "He does not complete its bowing or its prostration."

Narrated from an-Nuʿmān ibn Murra. Muwaṭṭa' Mālik 403 · verify it

When it was rushed

Over

He does not complete its bowing or its prostration

The narration names the two positions, so they are what gets counted — not a vague lapse of attention. Each rakʿah carries one bowing and two prostrations.

A name, mentioned

Nothing false said. Truth is what makes it backbiting rather than slander.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Four

  • A name comes up. Not maliciously — nobody was lying in wait for it. There is a small pause, and someone says “I mean, he’s a lot.”
  • And you add the small thing you know, because to withhold it would be odd. It would make the moment awkward.
  • Ninety seconds. Then the subject changes. Nobody in that room did a thing he would call wrong.
  • You mentioned it again at home that evening. And the person you told mentioned it to somebody else.

"Do you know what backbiting is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "It is your mentioning of your brother in a way he would dislike." The narration continues, in substance: he was asked what if the thing said is true of the man, and he answered that if it is true it is backbiting, and if it is not true it is slander.

The remark

Over

except the harvests of their tongues

A harvest is one seed returning as many. The remark is not the crop — the retelling is. So the tally multiplies the room by every time the same thing was told again.

and the narration this factor comes from

"And is there anything that topples people into the Fire upon their faces except the harvests of their tongues?"

The assumption

A verdict reached without hearing. It felt like reading the situation.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Ten

  • A short reply. A delay. A read receipt with no answer beneath it.
  • A story posted while your message sits unanswered. Each of these is a blank — and you filled it using the least generous reading available.
  • You did not ask him. You did not feel any need to ask him, because you already knew.
  • You mentioned to someone else what you had decided about him. It was never checked, and it travelled anyway.

"Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech."

The assumption

What left your head

Over

suspicion is the most false of speech

He called it speech. An assumption kept in your head and one you repeated are not the same act, and one you acted on reached the person it was about.

The deed, seen

Only you know whether a deed was done partly to be seen. If it was, this is how many saw it.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Six

  • Every one of us now owns a broadcasting station, and it is never switched off.
  • You gave, and then you photographed the giving. The giving was real. So was the photograph.
  • You did not post it to show off — you posted it so others would be encouraged. Both roads run through the audience.
  • For every generation before ours the number of witnesses to a good deed was capped by the size of the room. That cap is gone.

"Whoever makes others hear of his deed, Allah will make others hear of him. And whoever shows off, Allah will show him off."

What was posted

Your own reckoning

Over

Whoever performs a deed in which he associates another with Me, I leave him and his association

Two things, kept apart on purpose. How far a post travelled is arithmetic. How much of it was for being seen is not — only you know that, so it is an input and never an assumption.

and the narration this factor comes from

Allah said: "I am the most self-sufficient of partners, having no need of association. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates another with Me, I leave him and his association."

Interest

Interest paid or received. Most of us did not design the arrangement we are inside; the amount is still the amount.

You may not have called it anything at the timeChapter Eight

  • This is the one you are most likely to be committing at this very moment, while reading, without any action on your part at all.
  • It runs quietly in the background of a life — accruing daily, compounding monthly — on a decision you made once, years ago, in about four minutes, on a form.
  • The salary account you did not choose. The interest line on a statement you have never read to the bottom.
  • You did not design the arrangement you are inside. The amount is still the amount.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes ribā, the one who pays it, the one who records it, and its two witnesses — and he said: they are all the same."

Narrated from Jābir. Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1598 · verify it

Received — on what you hold

Paid — on what you owe

Over

the one who consumes it, the one who pays it, the one who records it, and its two witnesses — they are all the same

Most ribā is not one arrangement. It is received quietly on balances you keep and paid loudly on loans you service. Both are counted here, and the role you pick changes nothing.

and the narration this factor comes from

"O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of ribā, if you are believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war from Allah and His Messenger."

Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:278–279

after the arithmetic

Every number above can be multiplied. The next four cannot be, and that is the whole of it.

and yet

"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves — do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

Sūrah az-Zumar 39:53

the hand, extended

"Allah extends His hand by night, that the one who sinned by day may repent. And He extends His hand by day, that the one who sinned by night may repent — until the sun rises from its place of setting."

what He feels about it

what is said

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves — and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

Sūrah al-Aʿrāf 7:23

The calculator can multiply a rate by a duration. It has no operation for “Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” — there is no rate there and no duration, and nothing to divide it by.

That asymmetry is the design. The sin was made countable so that the mercy could be seen to be uncountable beside it. A reader who leaves this page frightened has been failed by it; the door named above is open by night for what was done by day, and by day for what was done by night.

These are your numbers, not ours. Change them to whatever is true of you — the point was never our guess at your life, it is the multiplication.
